Preparation for first reconciliation normally takes place when a child is in second grade, although older children may be enrolled in the program upon parent request. Children in the second grade are automatically registered for the first reconciliation preparation program when they register in the weekly K-8 faith formation program.
First reconciliation preparation takes place during three family sessions held monthly from October through December. Children attend these sessions with their parent(s) or another responsible adult. The preparation sessions are primarily parent led and include group activities and adult faith formation components.
First reconciliation is celebrated in December during the parish communal penance service.
In order to celebrate first reconciliation, children need to attend Mass and participate regularly in the weekly faith formation program, attend all the sacramental preparation sessions, and have previously been baptized. Children are prepared for and celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation prior to their first Communion.
