Preparation for First Communion normally takes place when a child is in second grade, although older children may be enrolled in the program upon parent request.
Children in the second grade are automatically registered for the First Communion preparation program when they are registered in the parish’s weekly K-8 Faith Formation program.
First Communion preparation takes place during four family sessions held monthly from January through April. Children attend these sessions with their parent(s) or another responsible adult. The preparation sessions are primarily parent-led and include group activities and adult faith formation components.
First Communion is celebrated in late April or early May. In order to celebrate their First Communion, children need to attend Mass and participate regularly in the weekly faith formation program, attend the four sacramental preparation sessions, and have previously celebrated the sacraments of Baptism and Reconciliation.
